californiabonesGenre: Adult, Urban Fantasy, Heist

Pages: 304

Point of View: Third (Daniel & Gabriel)

Released: June 10, 2014

Series: Daniel Blackland 1

Predictability: 3 out of 5 (Where 1 is George RR Martin (If the characters make a plan or think about the future I know it isn’t going to go that way.) And 5 is Cinder (where I guessed what was going to happen long before it did, but it was still a great book.)

Source: Owned

Warning: People eat people to gain powers.

My Rating: 8/10 Stars

My Summary:

Daniel’s father was a powerful osteomancer, someone who can gain magical abilities from eating bones. During one of the Hierarch’s cullings (Bad guy’s excuse to kill people) he’s killed by powerful magicians and then the Hierarch himself  ‘gains his powers’. (Yeah it’s exactly how you think.)

Years later Daniel’s become a thief and his ‘uncle’ (a mobster type business man who essentially raised him since he was twelve) wants him to break into the Hierarch’s Ossuary (vault) and steal some fangs that are worth a fortune. He can also get back his father’s sword, which is magically tied to him.

My Review:

This is one of those books that I was overwhelmed when I finished and had to let my mind stew for a day before I could write my review.

The Good:

The magical system is so unique! Mythical creatures used to roam the world; griffins, hydras, fire drakes, and more. Now oseomancer’s can obtain their powers by consuming these fossils. The magic is scientifically explained so that it actually makes sense. Most osteomancers have to keep eating the bones to keep their powers, but due to his father’s experiments, Daniel doesn’t. (He doesn’t suffer from special protagonist syndrome either.)

The other great part about this novel was the world building! Set in an alternate California, the southern portion is ruled by the Hierarchy. Though most of the economy revolves around osteomancy, they also have technology; electricity, television, and firearms. Instead of roads they have canals, and use boats for transportation. (Like Venice)

We don’t learn much about the world outside of California, and I’m also uncertain when this book takes place. Because most of the dates mentioned have to do with the Heirarch and he’s has lived for decades. (But I didn’t mind not knowing!)

The Heirarch’s one of those villains where we don’t know anything about him other than he’s creepy, evil, and powerful. (My favorite villains are the ones I feel like I’ve gotten to know, but I don’t think the author was going for sympathetic here.)

The main characters are Daniel’s old friends and fellow thieves. Cassandra (Daniel’s ex) is an expert thief and sharp shooter. She’s probably the most valuable person in the group, and the only one without magic. The other members of the heist team are Jo a shapeshifter, Moth the muscle and due to an accident he has magical healing, and Emma the inside woman who we’re not sure we can trust. I liked how Daniel’s crew had his back and trusted him no matter what.

The other narrator is Gabriel, the Hierarch’s great nephew who’s a paper pusher in the government. I wasn’t sure if I liked him, but I enjoyed his chapters with his hound Max. Max is really a man, but he was turned into a hound (not literally) by being fed magic to increase his sense of smell and now he’s treated like an animal by the government.

All of the characters were good, but I wanted to learn more about them and their histories. (You know me, I have so many questions) There also wasn’t any romance, even though Daniel still has feelings for Cassandra. I wish they bantered more, but I guess there wasn’t time.

This is a quick paced novel and though the plot was solid, it was in my opinion the weakest part of the book, especially in the end. I’m not saying there was anything wrong with it, it was just my least favorite part. (When I finished this book, I knew I really liked it but there was something bothering me. After two days of thinking this is all I’ve been able to come up with.)

The Bad:

My main complaint was that the book was so short, (Only 300 pages!) and there was so much more that could have been added. There were so many good characters I wanted more of, more of the world, and just generally more. Don’t get me wrong the author was able to write an amazing book. (It’s not a standalone but it could be) This easily could’ve been a thousand page book and I wouldn’t have complained.

PACIFIC FIRE

(No Spoilers even if you haven’t read California Bones)

pacificfire

Pages: 336

Point of View: Third (Sam, Daniel & Gabriel)

Released: January 26, 2015

Series: Daniel Blackland 2

Predictability: 2 out of 5

Source: Netgalley

My Rating: 7/10 Stars

My Summary:

Sam is a golem. (Which I think is really cool!) Daniel adopted Sam ten years ago. Since then they’ve been running from basically everyone. The high magical concentration in Sam means everyone wants him.

Gabriel contacts Daniel, the powers in Los Angeles are uniting to create a living Pacific Firedrake. (Gigantic dragon of doom) Daniel is the only one with enough power to destroy it. He plans to leave Sam where it’s safe, but teenagers sometimes don’t do as they’re told.

My Review:

While book one was heist oriented Pacific Fire is more of a journey novel.

The Good:

We get to see more of Southern California outside Los Angeles, but it wasn’t anything special, dirty motels, old trucks, and desert.

The atmosphere that made the first book is present again. I’d say this is a darker fantasy, but there are still lighter moments.

The characters remain very real and flawed. (None of them are described as beautiful!) I enjoyed getting to know Sam and Em. Both were great characters, particularly Em. Sam falls in love easily (he knows this) and he hasn’t had many friends because he never stays in one place. It was nice watching him becoming friends with Em and attempting to flirt.

We also met a couple of new bad guys Mistress Cauldron and Madam Tooth. I liked how the characters from the first book appeared again and we got to see how they’ve grown over the past decade.

The best part of the books remains the magic. Here there’s new social uses and magical bombs and tools.

The plot was just as good as the first book, but it was even less predictable! All I can say about the ending is that I never saw it coming. I’m so glad the last one will be coming out later this year, because again I needed more!

Do you write your reviews right away or do you like to think about the book for a day or so?

I almost always write my review right away, so I don’t forget. I try to make myself write the review before I let myself start the next book. But sometimes, like with California Bones, I just needed time to process.

Sorry this review was so long! I had a lot to say about California Bones, but I didn’t want to put off my review of Pacific Fire since the book came out this week. Thanks for reading all of this. 🙂

Top Ten Books on my Might Read List

27 Tuesday Jan 2015

top 10, top 10 tuesday, top ten, top ten tuesday

toptentuesday

(Okay so this is my freebie because I didn’t come up with the idea in time.)

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. They come up with top ten lists that people can blog about every week.

I like things organized so on Goodreads I have a Might Read Books list. (Which had 138 books on it, but I’m now down to 107 after making this list)

One of the best parts of these lists (besides reading them all) is getting opinions on books I’m curious about, hence this list.

falseprince1. The False Prince

A civil war is brewing. A nobleman has a plan to find a look alike for the king’s long lost son and make him a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role.

Why it sounds good: The political intrigue and war brewing, a competition to become prince.

Why I’m unsure: PTSD, kids killing kids?

2. Across the Universeacrosstheuniverse

Amy’s on a spaceship where she was supposed to sleep for 300 years and arrive at a new planet, but she’s woken up 50 years early, because someone tried to kill her.

Why it sounds good: Scifi and mystery

Why I’m unsure: too much romance (instant) and beautifully perfect characters

incarceron_book_cover3. Incarceron

In a futuristic prison a young prisoner with no memory of how he got there find a crystal key which enables him to talk to the warden’s daughter who is trapped in a prison of her own, an arranged marriage.

Why it sounds good: I’ve heard good things, Sounds a bit like man in the iron mask

Why I’m unsure: the whole prisoner thing

4. Every Dayeveryday

A wakes up in a different body every day. A has no control over who he winds up in. Then A is in the body of Justin and falls in love with Justin’s girlfriend.

Why it sounds good: Cool Premise

Why I’m unsure: Stalker who processes bodies

bloodredroad5. Blood Red Road

Saba lives in a wasteland with constant sandstorms. When her brother is kidnapped by the four horsemen she teams up with a band of girl revolutionaries.

Why it sounds good: kick butt heroine

Why I’m unsure: strange narration style

6. The Monstrumologistmonstrumologist

Will is assistant to a Monstrumologist, someone who studies monsters. A grave robber brings them their most deadly case yet.

Why it sounds good: Monsters

Why I’m unsure: Horror

7. Crewel crewel

Adelica has the ability to weave time, but she’s trying to fail. Those chosen by the guild live a life of privilege, but they also control people. One mistake was all it took and now they’re coming for her.

Why it sounds good: Such a cool premise!

Why I’m unsure: Sexual discrimination, slow paced

8. Rebootreboot

Reboots have died, the longer they stayed dead the tougher they are. Wren was dead for 178 minutes, the longest ever. She’s in charge of training new reboots. Callum is a 22, and practically human, so why is Wren attracted to him?

Why it sounds good: Kick butt girl who’s different

Why I’m unsure: Romance over plot

rubyred9. Ruby Red

Gwyneth hasn’t been prepared for traveling through time like her cousin, but suddenly it’s her whose in a different era. She’ll have to work with Gideon, a time traveler from another gifted family, to discover who in the 18th century they can trust.

Why it sounds good: Time travel!

Why I’m unsure: The book was translated into English so some parts are awkward, slow to start.

10. The Nightmare Affairnightmareaffair

Dusty is a Nightmare, literally. She goes to an academy for magical peoples, but she’s the only Nightmare. When she sees a murder in someone’s dreams that happens in real life she has to look for clues before someone else winds up dead. (Of course the dreamer is a cute boy)

Why it sounds good: A magical school, a nightmare (never heard of that one before) and a murder.

Why I’m unsure: Too much romance instead of mystery

By the sounds of this I don’t like romance. That isn’t so! I just like characters, plot, and action more. I don’t mind romance in a book, I just don’t like it to take over.

How much romance do you like in your books?

accidental-alchemistGenre: Adult, Cozy Mystery, Fantasy

Pages: 360

Point of View: First (Zoe)

Source: NetGalley

Released: Jan 8 2015

Predictability: 2 out of 5 (Where 1 is George RR Martin (If the characters make a plan or think about the future I know it isn’t going to go that way.) And 5 is Cinder (where I guessed what was going to happen long before it did, but it was still a great book.)

My Rating: 7/10 Stars

Parental Rating: PG

My Summary:

Zoe is a 300 year old Alchemist. Due to a trauma in her past she gave up alchemy almost a century ago. Now she plans to start a ‘normal’ live in Portland Oregon. She bought a large old house that the neighborhood dubbed haunted and shipped her antiques from France.

When she unpacks she finds something unexpected in her crates, a living gargoyle named Dorian. He’s a person in his own right and he’s come seeking Zoe’s help. Between him and a local troubled teen they turn Zoe’s life upside down and make her house feel like a home.

When her contractor ends up dead on her doorstep and she smells poison she tells the police detective, but because she can’t explain her skill she naturally becomes a suspect. When they discover that Dorian’s Alchemy not Alchemy book was stolen by the murderer she has even more of a reason to find the killer.

My Review:

I’d dub this book cozy. It’s a nice little light mystery with a hint of romance. I liked that she was an alchemist, which hasn’t been done much. I think if you like mysteries you’d enjoy this book, because although she thinks about her long past often, her magic isn’t a large feature of the book. Though what magic there was, was well done. (Though of course I wanted more of it.)

The Good:

The best part of Accidental Alchemist was its characters, from the cooking gargoyle to the troubled teen who just wants to help his friend.

Dorian (the gargoyle) is French and has a love for everything from France. Throughout the book he uses French words and phrases (I don’t speak any French) but it wasn’t hard to figure out what he meant from the context. Dorian’s also a cook and since Zoe is a strict vegan he comes up with new recipes for her. Most of which are included at the end of the book, (I’m not going to try any of them, because when I cook bad things happen and though the author made the food sound good vegetables aren’t my cup of tea. (I prefer cookies)

The mystery was well done. I actually didn’t guess who’d done it ahead of time. (and I usually do.) There were enough suspects and details about all of the characters, and yes plenty of red herrings that threw me off the trail.

This isn’t a romance book and there isn’t much romance in it, but what is there is well done and if there’s a sequel I look forward to seeing the relationships grow. There’s also humor thrown in and I chuckled in spots, which makes all books better.

I liked how Portland was described, from the tea house to Zoe’s airstream, to her new home. Zoe has a great nose so there are also plenty of smells described as well, which I enjoyed.

This is a cute little feel good book, which was just what I needed. I look forward to the sequel. (The author hinted that there might be one in the acknowledgments and I’m hoping there is.)

The Bad:

This book is slow paced and there are long stretches where not a lot happens. My usual fantasy novels have magical duels and such, but this wasn’t that kind of book. (Which surprisingly wasn’t a bad thing.)

Would I recommend this book? Yes. Will I read the Sequel? Yup.

I read this book in December, so details are a little fuzzy. I don’t remember it as fondly as I wrote here, but that happens. I was surprised though that most of the reviews weren’t very positive. I think that’s because the blurb made it sound like an urban fantasy not a cozy mystery.

Has that ever happened to you, the book you got wasn’t anything like you expected? Was it still good or were you disappointed?

Generation V, Iron Night, and Tainted Blood by ML Brennan

generationvGenre: Adult, Urban Fantasy, Vampires, shape shifters, fairies

Pages: 312

Point of View: First (Fortitude)

Released: May 7, 2013

Predictability: 4 out of 5 (Where 1 is George RR Martin (If the characters make a plan or think about the future I know it isn’t going to go that way.) And 5 is Cinder (where I guessed what was going to happen long before it did, but it was still a great book.)

Source: I got this book for Christmas yay!

Warning: Violence and gore (mentions child rape)

My Rating: 8/10 Stars

My Summary:
Fortitude Scott works at a coffee joint, due to his useless degree in film theory. His roommate owes him months of rent and his girlfriend is cheating on him. He’s also a vampire, or he will be after he transitions. Something he dreads and is doing everything he can to postpone.

When a girl is killed and two others are kidnapped and Fort knows a vampire is responsible he can’t just do nothing.

My Review:

By now you all probably know how much I love a funny and sarcastic protagonist, but Fort upped the ante by being a nerd too! I loved all the geeky references!

These are some of the most unique vampires I’ve read about. (And I have a bit of a vampire addiction as long as it isn’t a romance book) Also there’s the Kitsune, (fox shape shifters with illusion magic) which are a favorite of mine from Japanese mythology and they were also really well done.

Fort’s full name is Fortitude and his siblings are Prudence and Chivalry. His family are vampires, so they have questionable morals, but despite not being exactly good people they were interesting and I liked them. Fort and Suzume the fox were my favorites though.

A few reviewers complained because Fort is very much a doormat and a wimp, but I could relate to him and I figured that way he has room to grow into being a hero. (It’s only when a previously strong character gets weak that annoys me)

This book was quick and enjoyable. Feels like more. 🙂

ironnightIRON NIGHT

Pages: 305

Released: January 7, 2014

Warning: Violence and gore (mentions torture)

My Rating: 9/10 Stars

My Summary:

Fortitude has a new job and a new roommate, both improvements from last year. Iron Night takes place four months after the end of Generation V and Fort’s been working out with his older brother Chivalry. He’s also gotten to be good friends with the Kitsune Suzume, which comes with its own problems. When someone is murdered and dumped in Fort’s apartment, his family dismisses it as a human matter, but Fort can’t let it go.

My Review:

I liked this book as much as the first and the mystery and plot were even better! The growing friendship between Suzume and Fort was great! I was afraid because Suze is a tough character to pull off because she’s so complicated and unpredictable, but she was even more fun in this book!

Chivalry isn’t in the book much, because he’s spending more time with his dying wife, but we got more Prudence instead. She’s a scary character, a true vampire at heart. I enjoyed watching her relationship with Fort. (Is it wrong to like a Sociopath?)

I liked the new characters that were added as well, mostly the potential love interest. She was cute and sweet and perfect for Fort. Even though I liked her I still want Fort and Suzume to get together because I love them both, but oh boy would that be a whirlwind of a romance.

taintedbloodTAINTED BLOOD

Pages: 306

Released: November 4, 2014

Warning: Violence and gore

My Rating: 8/10 Stars

My Summary:

While Chivalry is spending time with his dying wife, Fortitude’s been put in charge of the family business. Along with his new partner the Kitsune Suzume. It’s been mostly quiet for the first month he’s been in charge, but now the head werebear (don’t call them that) has been murdered and it’s up to Fort to investigate.

My Review:

I enjoyed the growing relationship between Fort and Suzume. They trust each other more now and confide in one another. And joke of course. (I want a friend like Suzume!)

I like how in each book we learn more about this world. Here we not only learned about the werebears, but also a little bit about the ghouls who run funereal homes and do autopsy’s.

There was of course still plenty of family drama. I didn’t like Chivalry as much, but I feel like I understand Prudence better. (Yep she’s psycho)

It was strange that Fort had the family behind him for once and all of their resources. (Which surprisingly didn’t help much) I didn’t think this mystery was as well done as the previous ones, but that could be because I figured it out right away. The ride to get there was still really fun. I just love these books!

The fourth book, Dark Ascension will be published on August 4th 2015. I can’t wait!

If you like Generation V, I recommend Hold my Closer Necromancer by Lish McBride. (Or if you like Necromancer, Generation V) They’re quite different, but the tone is the same.

Do you ever do that, find a book you love and go looking for another just like it?

Oddly enough I searched for another like Generation V, but couldn’t find one. A week later I started Necromancer and was pleasantly surprised.

If anyone knows of another book like Generation V, please let me know! 🙂

Top Ten 2014 Releases I Meant To Read But Didn’t Get To

2014 books, 2014 books I missed, 2014 releases, book haul, top 10, top 10 tuesday, top ten, Top Ten 2014 Releases I Meant To Read But Didn't Get To, top ten tuesday

toptentuesday

(Two in a row! Though I might have written this yesterday.)

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. They come up with top ten lists that people can blog about every week.

I have 125 books on my want to read list that were published in 2014, so this was the hardest list to make yet!

snowlikeashes1. Snow Like Ashes (Snow Like Ashes, #1) by Sara Raasch

In a world with four kingdoms named after the seasons, winter has been defeated. The survivors seek to steal back winter’s magic. Meira an orphan, secretly in love with her best friend the crown prince, sets off alone to recover an ancient locket that can restore winter’s magic.

Epic fantasy, magic, and political intrigue, yes, yes and yes!

Why Haven’t I read it yet? My library hold hasn’t come in.

2. Trial by Fire (Worldwalker, #1) by Josephine Angelinitrialbyfire

Lily suffers from life-threatening allergies. When she wishes she could disappear at a party she discovers she really did, into another version of her home town of Salem. In this other Salem magic exists and strongest and evilest witch is her alternate Lillian.

It has magic and parallel universes, what’s not to like?

Why Haven’t I read it yet? I’m cheap and it’s expensive.

3. Half Bad (Half Bad, #1) by Sally Greenhalfbad

Two warring factions of witches live in England. Nathan is an abomination, caged, beaten, and trained to kill. The son of the most violent witch, Nathan has to track him down and receive the three gifts that will awaken his magic.

I’m afraid it will be dark, but witches and a supposedly evil boy and magic. I need this.

Why Haven’t I read it yet? Some reviewers I trust had trouble with the slow pacing, so I keep choosing other books first.

4. A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird, #1) by Claudia Grayathousandpiecesofyou

Marguerite’s parents are scientists. Their latest project, the Firebird, enables someone to jump between parallel worlds. Her father is murdered and the killer, their lab assistant Paul, runs away to another universe. Seeking revenge Marguerite follows him.

Revenge and parallel universes. 🙂 Love triangles. 😦

Why Haven’t I read it yet? I’m afraid the romance will overshadow the plot. Who has time to be caught between two guys when avenging their parents murder anyway? (My library has it, so I’ll probably read it soon.)

veronicamarsbook5. The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line (Veronica Mars, #1) by Rob Thomas & Jennifer Graham

Veronica mars is a spunky little blond private investigator. She’s clever, and snarky. Based on a tv show (which I loved!) where she was in high school. The book series takes place after the movie (also good) and continues her adventures. Once again a PI (in the movie she became a lawyer. Yuck!) and back to living in Neptune.

I was so sad when Veronica Mars was cancelled. The book is written by the writers of the original, so I have high hopes.

Why Haven’t I read it yet? I don’t usually read mystery, but I think I need to make an exception for Veronica.

6. Prince of Fools (The Red Queen’s War, #1) by Mark Lawrenceprinceoffools

The Red Queen is growing old, but she is still feared by the other Kings. Her most powerful weapon is the Silent Sister. Her grandson is the most unlikely of heroes, a drinker and gambler who’d rather love than fight. But when the Silent Sister sets a trap for him, he has to journey across the empire to break the curse.

A prince who is a coward and uses his wits to escape danger and witty one liners, gimme!

Why Haven’t I read it yet? I own but haven’t read Prince of Thorns and figure I should always read the first (cheaper) series first. (Same for Half a King by Abercombie.)

talon7. Talon (Talon, #1)

Dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George long ago. They’ve been rebuilding their numbers in secret, hiding as humans. Ember is a young dragon who only wishes to be normal and Garret is a member of the order sent to kill young dragons.

Dragons, a forbidden romance, and dragons.

Why Haven’t I read it yet? The reviews are mixed. I’m afraid there is too much every day stuff and too few dragons. (again it’s at the library so I’ll probably read it this year)

8. Stolen Songbird (The Malediction Trilogy, #1) by Danielle L. Jensenstolensongbird

A witch’s curse has bound trolls underground for centuries. When Cécile is kidnapped and taken to the land of the trolls she surprisingly makes friends with them. She learns that the half humans half trolls are treated badly, but there is a rebellion brewing. She’s forced marry to the prince who is of course gorgeous (yes a pretty troll) and the secret leader of the rebellion.

TROLLS!

Why Haven’t I read it yet? I have no excuse since I’ve had it on my Kindle for months.

9. Nice Dragons Finish Last (Heartstrikers, #1) by Rachel Aaronnicedragonsfinishlast

As the smallest dragon of the clan, Julius survives by staying quiet and meek. Fed up by his weakness, his mother seals him in human form. He has one month to prove himself or he’s stuck like this forever. In a city of mages where dragons are considered monsters he’s going to need some help.

Yes, more dragons. I love the whole he’s thought of as a monster but he’s good thing!

Why Haven’t I read it yet? I just learned about it from Pabkins.

10. California Bones (Daniel Blackland #1) by Greg Van Eekhoutcaliforniabones

People eat bones and gain magic abilities. Daniel’s dad is a powerful magician, so other magicians attack him and yeah ‘gain his powers’. Years later Daniel’s become a thief and his uncle wants him to break into a vault and steal back his father’s sword.

A magical heist along with one of the strangest magic systems I’ve heard of, how could I resist?

Why Haven’t I read it yet? I just bought it on the Book Outlet Boxing Day sale, so I will change this soon!

Other Books On My List: Dorothy Must Die, The Kiss of Deception, The Midnight Queen, & Girl in the Well.

Speaking of the Book Outlet Boxing Day Sale, here’s my haul! (Bunny Photobomb)

bookoutlet

Some I’ve already read and loved, (Scarlet, Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm) and some I really shouldn’t have bought, (Jenna Fox, Paranormalcy, Unearthly) but I can’t resist a sale!

Okay, so it becomes really obvious when reading this how cheap I am… I love books, but $15 for a book I don’t know I’ll like? I can’t do it!

How do you buy most of your books? New, used, preorder, sale?

I buy most (like 95%) of my books used. The rest are sale Kindle books. (other than my bookoutlet order above)

Warning: Violence

My Rating: 8/10 Stars

Usually it’s hard for me to review a sequel, because I don’t want to spoil the first book for those who haven’t read it, but with Golden Son that wasn’t a problem at all. So even if you haven’t read Red Rising you don’t have to worry about spoilers here. (click to read my review of Red Rising)

My Summary: (Stuff about the world learned in Red Rising)

In a world where one’s color determines one’s status, Darrow was born the lowest, a Red. The Reds were lied to, told they were living a horrible life for the betterment of mankind, working to terraform Mars for their descendants, but really Mars has been colonized for years.

Darrow was approached by the Sons of Ares, a group of Reds who want to change the system. They changed Darrow from a Red into a Gold, the highest ruling class, and snuck him into their elite institute.

Golden Sun Summary:

Darrow’s been out of the Institute for two years now. A year ago he joined the academy where they train for the military.

The book opens on his final exam for the academy. He’s playing a similar game as before, only this time with warships in space.

My Review:

With such a large cast it’s hard to remember them all, but the author did a good job of reminding me.

Like the first, this book has copious slang, (Yikes he’s got me talking like him now.) but it isn’t as annoying as it was in Red Rising. (Or I’ve finally gotten it all figured out.)

And Darrow is still holding things back. We’re in his head, but we never know all he does. I suppose that’s one way to write an intelligent character, but it’s so annoying.

The Good:

Golden Son starts with a bang. One thing I wanted from the first book was a starship battle and the space battles are some of the best I’ve read! I can tell that the author put a lot of thought into the types of ships and tactics that would be used in space. (I so want a companion book about all the ships, with pictures!)

More excellent world building! I liked the techy Blues and the way they communicate with the ship and each other. As well as the culture and history of the huge obsidian warriors.

I enjoyed the new characters as well as the old. It’s so hard not to have favorites and this is the kind of book I hate to get attached to anyone, but I can’t help it!

There’s also more levity. It’s by no means a comedy, but I did laugh out loud on the plane. (I have no clue if I got weird looks because that would require stopping)

And like the first book absolutely nothing is predictable. Unlike Game of Thrones good thing do happen, but there is no knowing when.

I had a book hangover for a week when I finished! Just wow. I need more!! I almost wish I’d waited to read the last two together or stopped before the cliffhanger ending. Talk about to be continued! Why does he do this to us?!

The Bad:

This is at times a dark an emotional book, which isn’t usually my cup of tea. Darrow is more mature in the sequel, but he’s still the same guy. (Moody and way too moral for what he’s trying to do) But the plot and story telling is so strong that it doesn’t matter that I don’t really care for the main character!

I highly recommend this series! Even though I realize it isn’t for everyone.

Who dies in Golden Son? Click here. Obviously SPOILERS! I so wish I knew this ahead of time so I wouldn’t have been so tense while reading.

Can top notch world building and plot make up for a lackluster or unlikable main character? Usually my enjoyment of a book rests largely on the protagonist, but if the world and plot totally rock I can still love the book. If I don’t like the main there does need to be some good minor characters though.

2015 books, 2015 debut authors, 2015 releases, top 10, top 10 tuesday, top ten, top ten tuesday

toptentuesday

(One in a row… I had last week’s all written ahead of time too.)

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. They come up with top ten lists that people can blog about every week.

I now have SIXTY 2015 releases on my list now! So I decided to do only Young Adult books this week.

redqueen1. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Expected Release Date: February 10th 2015

I expect this book will be on almost everyone’s list this week, because it just sounds so good! The premise does remind me of Red Rising, with Reds like slaves with god like people above them. (Only the top people are Silvers not Golds) Though in Red Queen there’s a girl main character and they have powers.

Mare, a red finds herself working at the Silver Palace, surrounded by the people she hates. She discovers she has a deadly power in spite of her Red blood. (I think usually only Silvers have powers)

Early Reviews? Mostly positive. Liked the powers, political intrigue and twists, but stupid character decisions, angsty mean girls, and sort of not really a love triangle.

2. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahiremberintheashes

Expected Release Date: April 28th 2015

Billed as an Epic Fantasy the plot reminds me a lot of Legend. My only problem is I’m going to totally picture the main character as Princess Leia.

Laia is a scholar whose brother is arrested for treason. Rebels put her undercover at the military school as a slave in exchange for helping save her brother.

Elias is the best solider, and secretly the most unwilling. He’s ordered to participate in a competition to be the next emperor.

Early Reviews? Almost all positive. Though people do say it is dark and violent.

witchhunter3. The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker

Expected Release Date: June 2nd 2015

I like the whole forbidden magic thing. (Like BBC Merlin) and this is also probably going to be a case of forbidden love. (Silly grin)

Elizabeth is on of the Kingdom’s best witch hunters until she’s accused of being a witch herself and sentenced to die at the stake. Surprisingly she’s saved by the kingdom’s most powerful wizard who wants her help tracking down the person who put a deadly curse on him.

Early Reviews? Hard to put down, things get insane quick, and great fight scenes.

sineatersdaughter4. The Sin Eater’s Daughter by Melinda Salisbury

Expected Release Date: February 24th 2015

The main character is different. She has a frightening power, which reminds me of Rogue from the X-men. She kills people when she touches them. How cool is that? (Okay in real life it would suck, but in fiction it rocks) I only hope this is more action than romance.

Twylla is engaged to the prince, but she’s the executioner. She has the power to kill anyone she touches. No one wants to be in the company of such a person, even the supposedly immune prince. When a new guard comes who can overlook her power and see the girl beneath, she wishes she could leave the prince, but no one crosses the queen. The queen has a plot to destroy her enemies and it’s up to Twylla to save her kingdom.

Early Reviews? Mostly positive. Lots of swearing so I’m anticipating an epic twist and excellent world building.

girlatmidnight5. The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey

Expected Release Date: April 28th 2015

It’s really the bird people which caught my attention on this one. I only wish it was a bird girl secretly living among humans instead. I also like multiple point of view books.

Echo, a runaway pickpocket is adopted by a group of bird like people living secretly under New York City. When war threatens her new family Echo searches for the Firebird, a mythical creature with the power to stop the war.

Early Reviews? Almost all positive. Good humor, fast paced, and great visuals. A not awful love triangle and no cliffhanger.

6. Becoming Jinn by Lori Goldsteinbecommingjinn

Expected Release Date: April 21st 2015

All of a sudden there are several Genie books and this one sounds like one of the best! I’m not sure about the whole beautiful magical transformation thing, I usually don’t like that, but I think I can look past it.

Azra turns 16 and transforms into a beauty. (Sigh) Her Jinn ancestry is asserting itself. She’s living a normal life, but secretly she’s learning to harness her new magical powers. She discovers she may not be a normal Jinn, but have dangerous powers.

Early Reviews? Not a ton of reviews but all positive. Humor, a contemporary fantasy, with good characters.

magonia7. Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

Expected Release Date: April 28th 2015

I love the idea of a character with a condition who then discovers it is only because they’re special. Also super powers and war helps make this my kind of book. I also like when an author twists real events to make fantasy believable.

Aza suffers from a mysterious condition that makes it hard for her to breath. She sees a ship floating in the sky and hears it calling her name. Somehow she winds up in the world of floating ships and finds she can breath easily and also has immense power. She discovers that her new world is on the cusp or war with Earth and must decide where her loyalties lie.

Early Reviews? Mixed reviews. Unique and original with great visuals, but many unanswered questions.

8. The Conspiracy of Us by Maggie Hallconspiracyofus

Expected Release Date: January 13th 2015

Look a book that is not a fantasy or scifi made my list! (It might have forbidden love though) and secret societies. It’s described as a light and fun action mystery. I’m only afraid of the love triangle..

Avery is the missing heir to a secret society. They are powerful and if they discover who she is some will want to use her as a pawn and others will want her dead. To stop them she must solve and ancient puzzle in a deadly race across Europe.

Early Reviews? Mostly positive. Thrilling, exciting, romantic, cute, but ends in a cliffhanger.

shutter9. Shutter by Courtney Alameda

Expected Release Date: February 3rd 2015

Reading the description I’d decided this horror wasn’t for me, but Kat Stark’s glowing early review has changed my mind. This sounds more like a darker Supernatural, and the girl even has a power.

Micheline sees the auras of the undead. She’s trained since birth to destroy monsters. Spiritual undead are killed with a camera. When a routine ghost hunt goes bad, Micheline and her team are infected with a curse.

Early Reviews? Almost all positive. Suspenseful, chilling and creepy with good character relationships.

wickedthing10. A Wicked Thing by Rhiannon Thomas

Expected Release Date: February 24th 2015

This one sounds really good, a sleeping beauty retelling where Aurora has magic! Unfortunatly the early reviews are mixed.

Sleeping Beauty after the happily ever after. All the people she knew are dead and her prince charming is a stranger. She’s worried that the curse left its mark on her. She’s not sure if she should marry the prince or run away.

Early Reviews? Mixed, with plenty of negative. Slow paced, well written, and not a lot of romance. Aurora was a good character, but a bit weak. Lots of unanswered questions.

How much to reviews matter to you? Since I became a blogger I’ve had less time to read (ironic) so I want to pick just the right books. Now I always read reviews first. It’s great knowing people who have similar tastes to mine. 🙂

Molly-SebastianI’m back~! Technically I got back Thursday, at one am… I missed you guys!! *Hugs computer*

I originally planned to post and comment from SC, but there just wasn’t time. (I blame my sister who can never sit still)

How were your holidays? Mine were nice. We had beautiful weather and could take puppy for walks to the beach! It was so weird (in a good way) to have a warm Christmas.

My Christmas haul:

Christmas2014Books

I also might have placed my first order from Book Outlet. 16 books for $40 including shipping, how could I resist?

2014 IN BOOKS (and pie charts)

Okay I know it’s silly, but I wanted to see how many books of each and stuff that I read last year, so I made pie charts. (I realize this post screams that I’ve had too much time on my hands.)
