A Song of Ice and Fire, Discworld, Grisha, Lunar Chronicles, Magnus Chase, mortal instruments, Percy Jackson, Red Rising, Saga of Recluse, Sequels I Can't Wait To Get, top 10 tuesday, top ten tuesday
Two in a row! I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I manage not to procrastinate two weeks in a row! (Who else is shocked?)
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. They come up with top ten lists that people can blog about every week.
I usually wait until an entire series is released before jumping in, because I hate having to wait to find out what happens next and this way I can just binge read the entire thing! But there have been a few times this year when I actually read a book in a series before they were all out. (A couple of times I was tricked!) And some of these are series I’ve been reading for years and they just keep on going.
1. The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1)
Expected Release Date: Oct 8, 2015
Okay so technically it’s book one, but I’m hoping Percy Jackson or Annabeth Chase make at least a cameo appearance. Riordan’s new book features Norse Mythology and stars Annabeth’s cousin Magnus.
He’s living on the streets when his uncle tracks him down and tells him he’s descendant from a Norse god. To prevent the end of the world (Ragnarok) Magnus has to search the nine realms for a weapon.
I mean Rick Riordan and Norse gods (secretly hoping for a Loki appearance) I just know this book is going to rock!
2. Winter & Fairest (The Lunar Chronicles #4 & 3.5)
Expected Release Dates: Fairest: Jan 27, 2015 Winter: Nov 1, 2015
I never expected to love Cinder, I mean cyborg Cinderella? But I do! And finally the last book is almost here! We also get a novella staring the evil queen Levana to tide us over for fall.
Things that need to happen: All of the couples live and are happy, obviously Levana is defeated and the Lunars freed. Cinder becomes queen of the moon and of New Beijing. Don’t want much, do I? Oh, and I want something nice for Iko too, she’s the best!
Expected Release Date: ???
It doesn’t have a title yet, but I need it! The epilogue in the first one convinced me that the sequel is going to be even more epic than it’s predecessor!
4. Raising Steam (Discworld, #40)
Release Date: Nov 7, 2013 (Tiffany Aching: Unknown)
(I have a feeling Pratchett is going to make every one of my lists somehow.) Okay technically the next Discworld book that’s going to be released is The Shepherd’s Crown (Tiffany Aching, #5), but I’m not as big a fan of Tiffany as the regular Discworld and I still don’t own Raising Steam! (I’m hoping for Christmas) I’ve owned Thud since it came out, but I’m still saving it so technically that could be on my list too.
5. Six of Crows (The Dregs #1)
Expected Release Date: Oct 8, 2015
Yes, I know technically this is another first book of a series, but it’s in the Grisha universe, so I say it’s a sequel.
A crew of dangerous felonious misfits face impossible odds when they are pulled together to break into one of the most guarded places in the world. We have new setting, Kerch which is the opposite of Ravka and the center for all world trade. Also there will be a Grisha in the Dregs and the magic will be expanded upon.
My least favorite part of Shadow and Bone was the two “main characters” so I have high hopes for this novel, since it sounds like it’s staring people more like Sturmhound.
6. The Copper Gauntlet (Magisterium #2) / Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1)
Expected Release Dates: Copper Gauntlet: 2015 Lady Midnight: Sept 2015
I loved the Iron Trial and I have high hopes for where the story’s going to go next! Since nothing’s been released about Copper Gauntlet, I’ll group it with Lady Midnight, which takes place five years after Mortal Instruments (See it is a sequel) and stars Emma Carstairs.
There are mysterious killings in the city and Emma is determined to investigate, because they are strangely similar to her parents deaths, but not only humans are being killed downworlders are too. After the fairy queen makes a deal, the shadow hunters stop whose doing this and they’re release Mark Blackthorn the stakes are higher than ever, because if they fail it means war. And they only have two weeks!
I don’t expect this to be as good as Mortal Instruments or Infernal Devices, but I’m hoping to see more of Tessa and Jem! I don’t like the sounds of her falling in love with her parabotai, I know it’s forbidden, and maybe she’ll convince me, but it’s not really doing it for me. I liked Mark much better!
7. Cyador’s Heirs & Heritage of Cyador (The Saga of Recluce #17 & #18)
Release Dates: May 20, 2014 & Nov 18, 2014
I know none of you have heard of these books, but I love Modesitte’s epic fantasys. (The Corean Chronicles is my favorite, followed by Recluse)
The novels in the Recluse Saga are written out of chronological order, but in pairs (can’t spell duologys) and I wait until both are out to read them. This story line takes place after Cyador fell, so sixth? chronologically. Another coming of age story with a young male protagonist who wields both chaos and order powers, but I know Modesitte will make it awesome!
8. Golden Son (Red Rising Trilogy #2)
Expected Release Date: Jan 6, 2015
I really liked the start of Red Rising and I expect Golden Son to be more like that. I have a feeling we’ll finally get to see the space battle I expected from the first one. My main problem with Red Rising was the main character, Darrow and I’m hoping that he matured through everything the first book put him through. ‘Now a part of the elite, Darrow tries to bring down their society from the inside.’ doesn’t tell me much, but the first novel was nothing like I expected, so I’m trying to go into this one without expectations.
9. Siren’s Fury (Storm Siren #2)
Expected Release Date: Jun 2, 2015
After that ending I needed more, but I’m not too eager to read this after the blurb. First it reveals something that was the main reason I wanted to read the book to find out. Then it tells us that the bad guy stole Nym’s powers. So the whole book is a quest for her to get new powers? I’m not so sure I care. The cover’s pretty though.
10. The Winds of Winter (A Song of Ice and Fire #6)
Expected Release Date: This Decade?
The first book came out in 1996 (That’s almost 20 years ago!) I want them to be good, but come on! I NEED to find out what happens already! It’s supposed to start with two epic battles and tying up all of thee to be continued-ness in the very beginning.
Honorable Mentions: Sequels I want, but there is literally no information on them yet.
Griever’s Mark 2 (My review of the first one) I loved this book and I NEED to find out what happens next!
Faerie Revolutions 2 (The Last Changeling) Another good book that left me wanting more.
The Shadow Ravens 2 (Cipher) I look forward to seeing what the other two authors will do with this interesting world.
Do you read series as they’re published or like me do you wait until they’re all released? What sequel is at the top of your for must have now list?

I have the sequel to The Young Elites on my list too. I need it. Like, yesterday. Lol.
I haven’t read The Iron Trial yet but I hope to do so by the end of the year. I’ve heard good things!

Molly Mortensen said:
The Iron Trial is a good book. I pretty much just said that in different ways in my review so as not to spoil anything. The middle is a tad slow, but stick with it, trust me it is worth it.
I wish the Young Elites sequel had a release date! I need it too! Usually I have a clue what a sequel is going to be like, but nope none whatsoever and I think that makes me want it more!
Caught Read Handed said:
Same with me for The Young Elites sequel. No idea. I’m so excited!
Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum said:
Yeeeeessssss, Golden Son. Gimmeeeeeee! I’m still checking NG daily to see if it’ll be available for request.
Molly Mortensen said:
Me too! I usually try to wait until closer to the release to read a book, but I think I might have to just read this one the second I can get my hands on it!
shereadssheblogs said:
Ooh I totally forgot about Six of Crows! I’m excited for that one as well 🙂
Molly Mortensen said:
Well it’s not technically a sequel, but I’m really excited for it. I wonder who the narrator will be? The Grisha or the head of the group of thieves maybe.
blodeuedd said:
LOL, oh George
Molly Mortensen said:
He has way too much fun killing off the wonderful characters he’s created.
hncook4 said:
I’m trying to wait and read Cress closer to Winter’s release date, but it’s hard not to go out and buy it to read immediately. I’m terrible when it comes to waiting. At least Fairest is coming out in January. Hopefully that will help me while I wait for Winter, haha.
Molly Mortensen said:
I liked Cress even better than Scarlett! Usually I try to wait, but once I start a series I have to get caught up. I’m so glad Fairest turned out to be more than just a short story. I really hope winter’s good! I get so nervous for the end of a series.
hncook4 said:
That’s really exciting to hear. I’m probably not going to last long with waiting to read Cress. I’ll end up caving and having to wait a really long time for Winter to come out.
Molly Mortensen said:
I don’t know how you’ve managed to wait this long to read Cress. At least between Cress and Fairest at least there will be plenty to tide you over until Winter.
La Coccinelle said:
I really should wait until all the books in a series are out before I read them (I have a bad habit of forgetting things and/or losing interest). On the other hand, I don’t like waiting because I’ve gotten spoilered in the past.
Molly Mortensen said:
I know what you mean, I hate accidentally reading spoilers. (When I go looking for them it’s different) I used to use a new release as an excuse for a reread, but with my blog I don’t really have time anymore.
kindlemom1 said:
LOL! It is hard to wait for sequels isn’t it? All great picks and some of them I am eagerly awaiting as well!
Molly Mortensen said:
Thank you! I’m terrible at waiting, I have no patience. Sometimes I wish authors could just release an entire series at once. (Not economical, but oh well)
Jess@Fairday's Bliog said:
I haven’t read any of the books that you are waiting for the sequels for. But- I am like you in that I try to wait until a whole series is out before I start reading because I have a hard time waiting. This doesn’t always work out though- and I am often waiting for a book to come out so I can find out what happens! Hope you get to read some of these soon!
Molly Mortensen said:
I used to never read a book until the series was all out. I think it’s because I keep reading about these amazing books on other blogs and I have to try them even though they’re not all out yet. Thank you!
findmeatthelibraryy said:
Ahhh after looking at your post, I just got excited for books I didn’t even think of including in mine!
Molly Mortensen said:
I know what you mean, reading about book on other blogs has really made me want to read list explode. I don’t usually read too many books without the whole series being out is the only reason I was able to keep this list under ten. (sort of)
Zoe said:
A spinoff series with Norse mythology and Annabeth’s cousin? HECK YEAH! I’m part Scandinavian myself, so I’m really interested in the mythological aspect of this one. And a Percabeth cameo would be awesome, no? 😉
And I am so excited for Winter too! 😀 I can’t wait to read into the backstory of Queen Levena to see how she became the tyrannical ruler she is. 🙂 Definitely going to be an amazing novella!
Thanks for sharing, and great choices! ❤
Molly Mortensen said:
Magnus Chase sounds awesome! I have some Danish ancestry too. I’m so hoping for more Percabeth!
I love that Fairest wound up 256 pages when it was going to be just a short story! I’m always interested in the villain’s back-stories and it’s nice to have something to tide us over until Winter.
Thank you!
Tabitha (Not Yet Read) said:
Oo oo another Grisha universe book huh, cool. I also can’t wait for the Lunar Chronicles books, I love them! I need to read Red Rising before the next comes out argh, heck I haven’t even read the last Grisha book lol
Tabitha (Not Yet Read) said:
Oh and I loved the original saga of Reculce books! I haven’t read all of them but I think I read the original series
Molly Mortensen said:
I’m looking forward to the next Grisha series because of the thief thing I was a bit underwhelmed with the last of the original trilogy. (Though most people loved it)
Red Rising is good, but based on the beginning of the book I expected it to be quite different than it was. (Not necessarily a bad thing.)
Yay! I haven’t met another fan of Modesitte’s! 😀 I liked some of the later books in Recluse even better. (Cerryl & Lorn were my favorite.)
Thanks! 🙂
Nathan said:
This decade for WoW? We can only hope my friend. I am still deciding if I want to read the next run in the Grisha universe. I thought it would be a series I loved but by book three I was pretty disappointed.
Molly Mortensen said:
I’m an optimist, what can I say. I felt the same way about Grisha, though I liked the first two books (though not her two main characters) I didn’t care for the third. I think it’s the thief aspect gives me hope.
Kat Stark said:
*chants* GOLDEN SON. GOLDEN SON.
LOL, but really I think I’m excited for several of those on the list as well 😀
Molly Mortensen said:
There are just so many awesome sequels coming out next year! I so hope I get to read the galley for Golden Sun! It’s going to be epic, I can just feel it!
Heather said:
I was actually the complete opposite—I thought I was going to hate Cinder, because, really? Cyborg Cinderella? Of course, now I’m DROOLING to get my hands on Winter and Fairest as well, and goshdarnit, is it time for them to be released yet?
Molly Mortensen said:
I had low expectations for Cinder going in, because the premise just sounds silly, but I really liked it! I’m only afraid that Winter won’t live up to my high expectations. I hope there’s a really cool explosive ending. (where everyone lives happily ever after of course) At least we get Fairest to tide us over, since Winter is so far away!
shannonmiz said:
Yay, look at you making it two weeks in a row! Bravo! Definitely Six of Crows! And The Young Elites 2 for sure, I agree, the epilogue was the best! Now, this series with the 18 books, how many will there be total? That is a LOT of books. It’s like The BabySitters Club, Fantasy style 😉
Also, he has been working on six books for 20 YEARS!? My goodness. I mean, he needs to start moving, he isn’t getting any younger Will this be the last, or is he planning to continue? Jeez. Great list, I love that you are doing these!
Molly Mortensen said:
Thank you! 🙂 I’m hoping to make it three even. I have no clue what Young Elites 2 will be like, but I have a feeling it will be good and thieves with magic, I just can’t resist Six of crows. Modesitte is very prolific (the guy with an 18 book series) He has like six other series too. I have no idea how long it will last, he jumps around in time so it could really go on forever. (I hope so anyway)
Yeah Martin is a seriously slow writer! But I suppose each book is approaching or over 1000 pages. I know! He says he’s written it all down how it should end should something happen to him, but still! I think there will be seven books total, so one more after the one I’m waiting for.
Thanks! 🙂 I’m glad I finally got to doing these too. They’re so fun!
Jess@MyReadingDress said:
I WOULD SELL MY SOULD FOR THE YOUNG ELITES 2 OK. The first wowed me so much and I’m just desperate for the next one. Lu’s definitely created something amazing here.
I’m not crazy about The Lunar Chronicles but I’ll admit, I’m curious about Fairest. I have hope that Meyer will wow us!
Molly Mortensen said:
Young Elites was definitely good and so unexpected. I think it’s so strange that I have no clue what the next book will be like, but I really really want to read it!
I really liked Cinder, so I’m afraid that Winter won’t live up to my expectations. I think Fairest will be good, because I always enjoy learning more about villains.
saraletourneau said:
Totally agree with you about “The Winds Of Winter”! But I’m still playing catch-up with that series; I’m planning to read “A Dance With Dragons” during the next season of “Game Of Thrones.” I want to read “The Young Elites,” but I want to read a couple other of Marie Lu’s books to make sure I like her style first.
I know what you mean about “Siren’s Fury.” The cliffhanger ending of “Storm Siren” had me praying there was a way to… well, I don’t want to give anything away, but the sequel’s synopsis pretty much killed all hope of that happening. I’d still like to read “Siren’s Fury” when it’s out, though.
I don’t have my own list, but if I did I know that Maria V. Snyder’s “Shadow Study” and Karina Sumner-Smith’s “Defiant” would be there. Both are due out next year. Yay!
Molly Mortensen said:
The Young Elites is NOTHING like Legend, so if it sounds good I’d say just jump in there, because lots of people who didn’t care for Legend loved Young Elites. (I really liked both)
I can NOT wait for Winds of Winter, so much was left hanging! I must have it NOW!
Yeah, I really liked Storm Siren up until that ending. I just really don’t like the whole have a really powerful character then they lose their powers thing. It’s been done and I never like it. I was surprised that there would be such a reveal in the blurb about the cliffhanger, generally that’s the idea of the cliffhanger to make people buy the next one to find out what happens next.
I haven’t read either of those series yet, but I hope you enjoy them. 🙂
saraletourneau said:
Oh, I know The Young Elites is different from Legend. 😉 I’m just trying to be a good girl and not spend a lot of money all at once on books! *lol* I’ll get to it eventually.
I actually yelled out loud when I reached the end of “Storm Siren.””! I slapped the book on my lap and said, “NO! No, no, no!” It’s funny (and kind of ridiculous) in hindsight, but it’s no lie.
Hmmmm, contrary to you, I haven’t read any fantasy books where characters lose their powers permanently. At least, not any I can think of off the top of my head… Which ones do you remember reading with that? Otherwise, I’ve read a couple books where characters feel tired / exhausted after performing magic, though, and that seems believable to me.
Molly Mortensen said:
I just meant if you wanted to get to know her writing style before reading Young Elites that wouldn’t work, because it’s so different in Legend. Yeah I know how that is. I’ve been a good girl and not bought any books for several months now, but it’s so hard!
I know, I yelled too! I can’t believe she ended it that way!
I like when characters get tired after magic, that’s more realistic than the limitless power of Harry Potter. I don’t like them losing their powers entirely, but it usually isn’t permanent. Of course the only one I can think of right now, that would be a HUGE spoiler if I told you. I’ll have to think more or that will bug me. Sword of Truth has the characters ‘lose’ their powers for a book at a time, which was annoying. I know there are more.
bendingoverbookwards said:
I haven’t got ‘Raising Steam’ yet but I’ve heard good things! And of course George R. R. Martin was up there- I wonder how often he gets asked when the next one is coming out…
Molly Mortensen said:
Pratchett is an automatic buy for me, all of his books are amazing!
I bet Martin is asked all of the time how soon the next book is coming out, because he’s so slow and so good.
Stephanie Faris said:
That’s an exciting feeling! Usually what I do is wait until all the books are out and read them at once. That makes it easier! Of course, if it’s a book with a lot of buzz, you can learn all the spoilers if you wait too long.
Molly Mortensen said:
I love reading a series all at once, but you’re right it is so hard to avoid spoilers. Allegiant and Game of Thrones were both spoiled on me.
alicia♥ said:
alright alright, it’s probably time to start reading the lunar chronicles! the thing is: i’m a science geek who loves everything to do with time travel, outer space, black holes etc, but.. cyborgs? idk!!! i know everyone loves this series so i need to get my little fear out of the way haha i WILL be reading it soon! EXCITED =D
alicia @ noverly things
Molly Mortensen said:
I’m actually rather fond of cyborgs. It’s just a fun little predictable story, so if you get in the mood for that, I’d say give it a shot. It is really good. 🙂
Cait said:
I’m screaming a little because I NEED Fairest and Winter so so badly. And ohh, yes! I’m excited for The Dregs too. Although I kind of forgot about it, to be honest. 😉 And I so do want to read the new Rick Riordan series but I HAVEN’T EVEN READ PERCY JACKSON YET. I read book 1 and then got distracted. >.> My bad. I will do that next year though. It’s next year’s series goal.
Molly Mortensen said:
I’m so excited for Fairest and Winter! I can’t wait to find out how it all ends! I’m a little nervous I have my expectations set too high. The thieves thing is what makes me want to read the Dregs. I hope there’s another character as interesting as Sturmhound. I’m easily distracted with most things, so I understand. Yay! I hope you enjoy them! I read them quickly so it shouldn’t take you any time at all.
Nobody @ The Story Goes... said:
I tend to prefer to read them(series) as they come out…it’s so daunting to read a whole series all at once! Then again…I do complain a lot when I have to wait for the next book in a series…
Yes, Magnus Chase! I need that in my life, along with Fairest and Winter(Winter!). I also really want to catch up and finish reading Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices before Lady Midnight comes out next year! I really want to get back into Cassandra Clare books I just can’t seem to! =)
Molly Mortensen said:
I hate waiting and I think there’s something special about reading them all at once since I don’t forget anything.
Magnus Chase sounds so good, even if there isn’t a Percabeth cameo! I can’t wait for Fairest and Winter! I must know how it ends! I hope everyone survives.
I’m not as excited for the Dark Artifices as I am for the Last Hours (the one taking place after Infernal Devices) but it comes out first. I actually liked Infernal Devices best and the last three Mortal Instruments just weren’t as good, though I did like the Magnus and Simon parts better. I hope you get caught up. 🙂
Carmel @ Rabid Reads said:
I just read a review earlier this morning for the first installment in Pierce Brown’s series; I’m thinking I should try to squeeze it in before January rolls around. I can totally relate to your The Winds of Winter comment, and least we got The World of Ice & Fire this past November to help tide us over a bit.
Carmel @ Rabid Reads
Molly Mortensen said:
Yes, Red Rising is worth the read. It’s unexpected, but still good. I have higher hopes for the sequel because it started so well even if I didn’t care for the second half of the book as much. How have I not heard of this?! I NEED this companion book now! Thank you for sharing!

Wow! Salutes! I haven’t done 2 back to back posts of TTT since like 3 months…lol!

Molly Mortensen said:
Thanks! 🙂 I should probably get to work on next week’s. I know! Winds of Winter has to come out soon, right? I know, he’s going to be 100 before he finishes it!

WHERE DO I EVEN START WITH THIS MUCH AWESOME??? Seriously, Winter! Six of Crows! Young Elites! *hyperventilates* Yes, basically I just need Iko to have a kick-ass happy ending 😀

I can’t wait for Fairest and Winter! The only problem is that we have to wait so long, especially for Winter! I can’t wait to read Fairest and all, but it just isn’t going to wrap up the series like Winter is.
Molly Mortensen said:
I completely agree! It seems like Winter took so long! I mean I’m glad we get Fairest to tide us over and it will be cool to learn about the villain, but it’s not the same as the conclusion. I just hope it’s good!
