Genre: New Adult, Science Fiction Thriller
Pages: 282
Point of View: Third (Sophia)
Released: May 15th 2015
Series: Redzone 1
Predictability: 5 out of 5 (Where 1 is totally unpredictable and 5 is I knew what was going to happen way ahead of time.)
Source: Netgalley
My Rating: 6/10 Stars
My Summary:
Sophia wakes up in a train station with no memory. Her ID says Sophia, but she knows that’s not true. A boy named Kyle seems to know her, but then people show up who she knows are bad. Her instincts scream at her to run. She might have no memory but she has spy like training.
Then we back up twelve weeks to when Sophia started at RTC college. We learn she’s undercover to find a certain student. Student X as she calls them is a mutant and if Sophia doesn’t identify him or her, they will. They = mysterious enemies.
My review:
Though rated new adult this first book is really more a young adult set in college.
I requested this book because I enjoyed Martin’s other series, Miss Misery (and the blurb promised that Sophia wasn’t human.) Sophia’s voice sounds totally different from Martin’s other main character. It always impresses me when an author can do that.
The good:
This was the kind of book that kept me reading looking for answers. It was also done right too. I got enough information not to feel strung along, but I was kept curious enough to keep turning pages.
The pacing alternates between exciting thriller and everyday college life and the time line bounces around as Sophia gets her memory back. (Sounds confusing, but it really wasn’t.) It’s set in the near future. Mostly our world, but there were few cool new inventions.
I liked Sophia in her flashbacks, but current her seemed ordinary and overly moral. (Okay so I might have skewed priorities, but there’s a time for morals and a time to kick bad guy butt without feeling bad about it!)
The best part was the friends she grew up with! Not only were they colorful characters, but they had a great relationship! Sadly, they were barely in the book. I’m hoping they become main characters in the next one!
The Bad:
There’s a love triangle of course. Between the guy she met at college (who she doesn’t know if she can trust) and a guy she grew up with. (Who she’s forbidden to be with.) I didn’t like either one. I know Martin can do banter, so where was it?
The plot kept me guessing, but only because I kept over thinking things. I was promised lots of twists and turns, so I couldn’t believe it would be so predictable! It was. Guess I read/watch too much SciFi.
My expectations were just too high. Do you ever do that? I hate it when I do, because even when the book is good, (Like this one) I wind up disappointed.

That’s disappointing. I hate it when I get all excited only to be let down😕 I hope your next read is much better.

Me too! I really should learn not to set my hopes so high. Thanks.

Sounds like the romance was a big dud on both ends of the triangle. Darn it. Sorry this wasn’t a better read even if it did have some good points.
Molly Mortensen said:
The romance didn’t really work for me, but I can see where some people would like it. I’m often the oddball when it comes to romances. Thanks. Overall it was good. I think I just expected amazing since I like her other series.

I really try not to have expectations before I read a book, but that’s often impossible to do. Especially with an author you’ve read before. Sorry this didn’t quite work for you!

I know! I try so hard not to have high expectations, but this one just sounded so cool and by a good author. Don’t get me wrong, it was good just not amazing. Thanks. Happy reading to you as well.

Of course, I always have way too high expectations. It’s pretty much a reason to throw a party when I end up rating a book five stars. This one actually seems like something I’d read, I love memory loss novels.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has too high of expectations. I just can’t help getting excited! I am stingy with my perfect scores too. Memory loss is fun. I hope you like it. I haven’t read a memory loss book since Lord Valentines Castle. (Which is really good by the way)

I don’t mind an occasional love triangle, but one where I don’t like either of the guys doesn’t sound like fun!
Molly Mortensen said:
Yeah, the romance felt unnecessary (at least one of them) I didn’t hate either guy, but they didn’t do anything to make me like them either. Oddly enough, with this author’s other series I love both guys! lol

I’m glad that I’m not the only one who can’t help but set my expectations too high. I am so sick of love triangles! They are so rarely necessary. (If ever) Thanks. I did have a great next read. 🙂

Ugh, that is disappointing! ANd YES- I feel your pain, I just finished a book that I was SO excited for, and it wasn’t BAD, but it was so predictible and I was left feeling so underwhelmed. That is such a an awful feeling 😦

I hate it when I get myself all over excited for a book. I try so hard to have low expectations, then either I’m right or pleasantly surprised. I don’t know why this book was so predictable for me. Maybe I’m just on the same wavelength as the author. I’m sorry that you just had the same experience. I hope your next read was better. Mine was! 🙂

Right, another NA that feels YA
Molly Mortensen said:
Exactly. I figure the only reason it wasn’t classified as young adult (besides character ages) is she plans to throw sex in later books.

Aw, what a pitty you did not enjoy it better. It sounds very interesting but too predictable storyline can ruin things for me as well. Great review!
Molly Mortensen said:
Thanks. Maybe it was only so predictable to me, like I’m on the same wavelength as the author or something lol.

I’ve read many books that were good, but I was slightly disappointed about it. Never read anything by this author before (at least, I don’t think so), but I’ll have to give this one a go.

It’s my own fault for having such high expectations. She’s a good author. I like her Miss Misery series better. This one is still good though. I hope you enjoy it. Maybe it won’t be predictable for you.

It sounds good even if we have the predictable part and the love triangle. It’s the first time I hear aout it I confess.

Yes, it was good! Well I’m glad that I was able to tell you about it. I hope you decide to read it.
